Politically correct fairytales
Here are some "politically correct" bedtime stories. I really like them, because they show how ironically our society sometimes works.
They are from a book written by James Finn Garner.
Little Red Riding Hood
The Frog Prince
Web pages
- https://learnenglish.britishcouncil.org/ (Autumn 2018)
- I was using this web page while I was preparing for Phonetics and Phonology oral exam. There are tons of articles, sometimes with listening and transcription and some tasks where you can make sure, that you understood the listening.
- You can find there even Vocabulary, Grammar, Business English and General English parts.
- This example is from "Reading Section" - every article includes preparation task, the main reading text, two tasks based on reading and a worksheet.
- It could be useful even for teachers because for every reading there is one worksheet, which can be easily used in every ESL class.
- https://www.insider.com/ (Spring 2019)
- I read Insider to get the latest news and it is also a great place where you can find interesting information from all over the world.
- You can also choose which topic are you interested in.
- I usually read articles about travelling, so I include one example here:
- Vocabulary I have learnt:

List of English books I have read since I started studying at Masaryk University
- The Boy in Striped Pyjamas - John Boyne (Winter 2018)
- I choose this book in terms of the Practical Language course.
- It seemed like a unique idea to me (to write about concentration camp but from Nazi's point of view), but after reading it I was quite disappointed because the language was simple and I did not learn any new words or structures at all.
- Alice in Wonderland - Lewis Caroll (Winter 2018)
- This book is one of my favourites in Czech but I have to say that this does not apply to English. It is hard to understand the language because the whole book is based on playing with it (creating new words and "shaping" it). On the other hand, Lewis Caroll is a Master of English, I really enjoyed reading it and wondering about all those new creations.
- The Great Gatsby - Francis Scott Fitzgerald (Summer 2019)
- My favourite book. It a masterpiece in literature. Everything; the language, the plot, the style of Fitzgerald's narration, ...
- I have read the book for hundred times, I even know some parts by heart.
- Sherlock Holmes: The Hound of the Baskervilles - Arthur Conan Doyle (Summer 2019)
- Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is a prominent and still popular writer up to almost 90 years after his death. So, of course, this book was very good, but there were a lot of new words for me.
- Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secret & Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone- Jeanne K. Rowling (Summer 2019)
- I am a true Potterhead and after reading the book over and over again in Czech I thought that it could be a good idea to read it in English. And I did not hesitate. Rowling is an incredible writer; she created a completely new magic world which is simply unbelievable. I love her work.
- And because I had to study for my exams I managed to read the second book too.
- Willa Cather - My Ántonia (Winter 2019)
- I was a bit sceptical before about this book and, to be honest, I cannot think of any reason why.
- After a few pages, my opinion seemed to be confirmed but then the book enchanted me and it captured my attention that much, that I read the whole book in two days (more specifically, in two nights).
